Take Steps

10,000 steps a day? That’s right. That’s the number of steps research suggests are needed every day to be an active person and maintain good health.

How can you know how many steps you’re taking over the course of a day? By using a pedometer. A pedometer is a small, lightweight device, worn on your shoe or belt, that counts every step you take—not just when you’re “exercising”, but as you go about your day. At the end of the day, clients write down the number of steps they’ve taken in their Daily Activity Planner, then push a button that clears the counter for the next day.

10,000 steps may sound like an awfully big number, but you’ll probably be surprised to find out how many steps you take in a typical day.

Watch Calories

To stop gaining weight, we need to eliminate just 100 calories a day from our diets. You can do that by leaving a few bites of each meal on your plate, skipping that expensive nonfat latte, or eating one less cookie. You can also burn an extra 100 calories a day by simply walking one extra mile, which takes only fifteen to twenty minutes. And you don’t even have to do it all at once — you can break it into two ten minute walks. These easy strategies won’t cause you to lose a lot of weight, but they will help you stop gaining!

If you’re looking to lose weight, eliminating alcohol from your diet is an essential first step. As recent news stories have reported, a glass of wine can be beneficial. But people who regularly drink beer, wine or liquor have a more difficult time losing weight, and here’s why: alcohol consumption inhibits fat burning. When the liver is processing alcohol, it doesn’t effectively metabolize fat. Alcohol is also a sugar, and often triggers carbohydrate cravings. A drink or two can undermine our willpower and lead to eating food we’d normally avoid. What’s more, alcohol is a depressant, so the odds of being active after a couple of drinks are greatly diminished. Instead of using alcohol to unwind, find new ways to relax, such as going for a walk, meditation, enjoying a hobby, or maybe taking a yoga class. Old habits can be hard to break, but the results are worth
